Mudroom Furniture
- Essentials for Keeping A Clean HouseThe entryway or mudroom can be the messiest area of the house. You need furniture for mudroom storage, which is sturdy and designed to hold the family’s coats, shoes and bags.
A mudroom is the designated entry way into a house where people come in with coats and backpacks, umbrellas, boots and other personal items. Many homes lack this feature so homeowners are forced to use the main entryway as a multi-purpose room. Whatever room your family uses, you still have a need for sturdy mudroom furniture to store belongings.
This is the room that can easily turn into a dumping ground for the family without the proper mudroom storage units. Backpacks on the floor, dirty shoes lying around and coats tossed on the nearest piece of furniture can all be avoided with a little planning. Your choices for organizing this room need to be durable and practical, but it is still possible to find very attractive options for storage.
Most basic is having a bench to sit on when removing shoes. Specially designed benches for entry rooms have cubbyholes built in under the seat. Each cubby can hold a basket, wicker or canvas, and be designated for a particular person in the family. There are larger units with an attached wall panel featuring a series of hooks for coats, briefcases, bags and other hanging items. An often used alternative is a series of lockers which have a top shelf, with hooks underneath, and a small cubby at the bottom. Sold individually or often as a set, you can purchase one for every member of the family. They can be placed on both sides of a bench or stand alone. Choosing furniture that is tall and narrow is a better fit for a room that typically has little floor space. There are other popular types of mudroom furniture which also work to conserve space as well as provide efficient storage options.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a larger mudroom, there are other very important storage items you want to consider. Clothing that ends up in this room is often wet or muddy. Set aside a special area for hanging clothes with enough room so coats don’t touch each other. Beneath the rack, place some shallow rubber containers, or rubber mats for wet shoes. Additional bins nearby can hold hats and gloves. If you can have separate bins or baskets for each family member then storing or finding matching gloves isn’t as much trouble. A series of sturdy wall hooks will hold backpacks and other bags. The key is to keep everything in one place, convenient to the door.
You want an attractive mudroom, but you have to consider the purpose of the room and the potential for dirt and mud. Any fabric coverings for bench cushions or other materials need to be stain-resistant and washable. This is not the room for delicate fabrics and expensive oriental rugs. You want a practical room with easy to care for materials.
This is the area of the house which cries out for an efficient storage arrangement. Kids need to know exactly where outerwear is as they rush off to school. And, no one should be walking through the house with muddy or wet shoes. With hanging racks, seats and bins for small items, your mudroom furniture will take care of all the family’s storage needs.
