Laundry Room Organization

- Tools to Create Maximum Efficiency

If you’re like most people, your laundry room could use a little organization help. Laundry room organization is actually a very simple process if you have the right tools in place. Here are some features you should take advantage of to make laundry day efficient and painless.

Wire Shelving

Modular wire shelving is the perfect solution for storing cleaning products. It is warp and rust resistant and won’t be damaged by strong cleaning solutions. Include a wall shelf above your washer to keep detergent, fabric softener and bleach handy. Make sure that your wall mounts are attached to studs so heavy chemicals don’t pull your attachments out and damage your wall. If you have space in your laundry room, include standalone wire shelves for extra cleaning solutions, cleaning towels, a hand-held vacuum and large items that you use infrequently.

Wall Hooks

Among forgotten laundry organizers is the humble wall hook. Sturdy wall hooks can be used to store items such as extra clothes baskets and hangers. You can also hang pillows and mattress pads to air while you wash their coverings. Make sure you attach them at eye level or above so your items don’t drag on the floor.

Drying Rack

A wall-mounted drying rack is the best option for air-drying hand wash delicates that can’t go in the dryer. If you are low on wall space, a standing rack will work. Choose one with at least three bars to ensure you have enough space for knits and wool items.

Ironing Center

A dedicated ironing center is worth its weight in gold for your laundry room organization if you have to press your clothes frequently. Install either a wall-mounted ironing board or a hanger for your standing ironing board to tuck it out of the way when not in use. Include a low shelf to hold your iron and starches where they won’t cause injury if they should fall. Also install a clothing hanging rod near your ironing board so you can hang ironed clothes conveniently until you’re ready to put them away.

Rolling Tool Cart

A small rolling tool cart is an extremely helpful tool. Choose one that looks like a small bathroom vanity on wheels. If it doesn’t have a towel rod on the side, install one to hang your cleaning towels, and also add a hook to hang a little trash bag for laundry debris. Ideally, this rolling storage cabinet will have drawers where you can stash laundry supplies like extra buttons, a sewing kit, lint rollers, and more. As you complete your laundry tasks, just roll you cart along with you and you’ll always have your supplies at hand. If you don’t have room for a rolling cart, a carry-along tool kit will work, too.

Folding Table and Drawers

A good-sized folding table is a must for a laundry room. But don’t waste the space below it! Tuck additional standing shelves or drawers under the table for storing lost socks and miscellaneous laundry tools. If you have room, leave enough space empty to store your rolling tool cart when it’s not in use.

Laundry Sorting Bins

Laundry sorting bins for laundry room organization make organizing your loads simple and prevent a stray white sock from wandering over into the colored clothes where it can turn pink. A three-bin system is most useful.

By selecting good organizational tools and using them consistently, you can simplify your work and get it done quickly. Use as many of these solutions as you are able to and you’ll spend less time washing clothes and more time doing the thing you love.
